Hexabothriidae [Hexabothriidae]
Description
The Hexabothriidae family is distinguished by its members' preference for parasitizing the gills of cartilaginous fish, such as sharks and rays. These parasites have a distinct haptor with six or more attachment organs, including hooks and suckers, which they use to firmly attach to the gill lamellae, extracting blood and causing gill damage.
