South American Lungfishes [Lepidosirenidae]
Description
The Lepidosirenidae family consists of a single genus and species, the South American lungfish (Lepidosiren paradoxa). These lungfishes are found in swamps and slow-moving waters of the Amazon, Paraguay, and lower ParanĂ¡ River basins. South American lungfishes are characterized by their elongated bodies, reduced limbs, and their ability to breathe air using a single lung. This adaptation allows them to survive in oxygen-poor water or during periods of drought. They are obligate air breathers, meaning they must surface to breathe atmospheric air. They are also known for their unique ability to aestivate in mud cocoons during dry seasons.
