Description

Balaenoptera is the genus of the largest animals ever known to have lived on Earth, including the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), the largest animal. This genus also includes other large species such as the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis), Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera brydei), Eden's whale (Balaenoptera edeni), and the minke whales. Members of this genus are characterized by their streamlined bodies, pleated throat grooves that allow them to expand their mouths for feeding, and a dorsal fin situated far back on the body.
