Deep-sea Lightfish [Photostylus]
Description
Photostylus is a genus belonging to the Bathophilidae family, known as deep-sea lightfishes. This genus is characterized by its members' notable bioluminescence, which is used for communication, attracting mates, and luring prey in the pitch-black environments of the deep sea. They have slender bodies, large mouths equipped with sharp teeth, and a distinct light organ located beneath their eyes. Photostylus species are found in deep pelagic waters, typically below 500 meters, where they lead a largely solitary existence.
