Handfishes [Brachionichthys]

Description

Brachionichthys is a genus within the handfish family, known for their unique method of locomotion. These fish 'walk' along the sea floor using their pectoral fins which resemble hands, hence the name handfish. They are benthic marine fish found in shallow, temperate waters off the coast of southeastern Australia and Tasmania. Members of this genus have a highly distinctive appearance, with elongated bodies, a skin texture that helps them blend into their surroundings, and elaborate skin flaps which aid in camouflage. They are ambush predators, feeding primarily on small crustaceans and other invertebrates.
