Hyperoodon [Hyperoodon]
Description
Hyperoodon is a genus of beaked whales in the family Ziphiidae, commonly known as the bottlenose whales. This genus is characterized by a bulbous forehead, which is especially prominent in adult males, and a relatively short beak. The dorsal fin is small and located far back on the body. Hyperoodon species are deep divers, feeding primarily on squid and fish. They are known to inhabit the North Atlantic and the Southern Hemisphere's cold temperate and subpolar waters. Socially, they are often found in small groups and are known for their loud, distinctive vocalizations used for communication and echolocation.
