La Plata Dolphin [Pontoporia]
Description
Pontoporia is the only genus in the family Pontoporiidae, commonly known as the La Plata dolphin or Franciscana. This genus is represented by a single species, Pontoporia blainvillei. The La Plata dolphin is a small river dolphin endemic to the coastal Atlantic waters of southeastern South America. It is characterized by its long, slender snout, robust body, and presence of a dorsal fin. These dolphins are known for their unique habitat preferences, residing in both freshwater and marine environments, including estuaries and coastal regions. They feed on a variety of aquatic organisms, including fish and squid. The La Plata dolphin faces significant threats from bycatch in fishing nets, habitat loss, and pollution, making it a conservation priority.
