Leaffish [Taenianotus]
Description
Taenianotus is the sole genus within the family Taenianotidae, commonly known as leaffishes, found in the Indo-Pacific region. These marine species are notable for their distinctive, leaf-like appearance, which they use for camouflage among seaweed and coral. They have laterally compressed bodies and are adept at remaining motionless, blending in with their surroundings to ambush prey. The genus is characterized by its unique dorsal fin structure and elongated pectoral fins, which enhance their camouflaged appearance. Members of this genus are small, typically not exceeding a length of 20 cm, and are found in shallow coastal waters, often in coral reefs where their mimicry is most effective. They are carnivorous, feeding primarily on small fish and crustaceans.
