Pelagic Stingrays [Pteroplatytrygon]
Description
Pteroplatytrygon is a genus of stingrays that are unique within the Dasyatidae family for their pelagic, or open ocean, lifestyle. Unlike most stingrays that are benthic, pelagic stingrays spend their lives in the mid to upper layers of the ocean, rarely coming close to the seafloor. These stingrays are characterized by their diamond-shaped bodies and the absence of a stinging spine, which is reduced in size or missing. They are capable of long-distance migrations and feed on a variety of pelagic fish and invertebrates.
