South Asian River Dolphin [Platanista]
Description
Platanista is the sole genus within the family Platanistidae, commonly known as the South Asian river dolphins. This genus includes two species: the Ganges river dolphin (Platanista gangetica) and the Indus river dolphin (Platanista minor). Previously considered subspecies, they are now recognized as distinct species. These dolphins are characterized by their long, slender snouts and reduced eyesight, adaptations to their murky freshwater habitats. They rely heavily on echolocation for navigation and hunting in the turbid waters of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, Meghna, Karnaphuli, and Sangu rivers for the Ganges river dolphin, and the Indus River and its tributaries for the Indus river dolphin. They have a robust body, a low dorsal fin, and large flippers. The population of both species has been declining due to habitat loss, pollution, and entanglement in fishing gear.
