Bowhead Whale [Balaena mysticetus]

Bowhead Whale
Description

The Bowhead Whale, also known as the Arctic whale, is a species of baleen whale endemic to the Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. They are named for their characteristic bow-shaped skull, which is used to break through the Arctic ice to breathe. Bowhead whales are known for their remarkable longevity, with some individuals estimated to live over 200 years. They are filter-feeders, primarily consuming zooplankton. Distinguished by their massive size, thick layer of blubber for insulation in icy waters, and lack of dorsal fin, bowhead whales are truly unique marine creatures.
