Indonesian Coelacanth [Latimeria menadoensis]

Indonesian Coelacanth
Description

The Indonesian Coelacanth is a close relative of the West Indian Ocean Coelacanth, discovered in 1998 off the coast of Sulawesi. It is slightly smaller than its relative, with adults reaching around 1.3 meters in length. This species also resides in deep-sea environments, typically in volcanic slopes. They are nocturnal and feed on small fish and squid. They are dark brown in color with white spots, and have a similar 'lobed' fin structure to the West Indian Ocean Coelacanth.
