Chitonidae [Chitonidae]
Description
Chitonidae, commonly known as the typical chitons, is a family of marine molluscs in the order Lepidopleurida. Members of this family are characterized by their oval-shaped bodies encased in eight overlapping calcareous plates. These plates offer protection against predators and harsh environmental conditions. Typical chitons inhabit various marine environments, from intertidal zones to deep-sea habitats, and they have a worldwide distribution. They play a significant role in marine ecosystems as grazers, feeding on algae and biofilms on submerged surfaces.
