Tree Oysters [Malleidae]
Description
Malleidae, or tree oysters, are a family of small to medium-sized marine bivalves. They typically attach to mangrove roots, coral, or other submerged structures in intertidal and shallow coastal waters. Tree oysters are named for their habit of growing in clusters resembling small trees. They are filter feeders, playing crucial roles in nutrient cycling and water filtration in their habitats. Their shells are elongated and can be quite variable in appearance.
