Chiton [Chiton]

Chiton
Description

Chiton is the type genus of the family Chitonidae, known for their unique eight-plated shell structure. Members of this genus are commonly found in intertidal and subtidal zones around the world. They have a distinctive appearance, with a broad, oval body encased in overlapping plates made of aragonite. These marine mollusks feed on algae and other small organisms by scraping them off rocks with their radula. Their ability to cling tightly to surfaces allows them to withstand strong wave action.
