Metorchis [Metorchis]

Metorchis
Description

Metorchis is a genus of digenetic trematodes, commonly known as flukes, in the family Opisthorchiidae. Species within this genus are parasitic in the livers of various mammals, including humans, where they occupy the bile ducts. The lifecycle of Metorchis species involves two intermediate hosts: freshwater snails and fish. Human infection can occur through the consumption of infected fish, leading to the disease metorchiasis. Although less common than infections caused by Opisthorchis or Clonorchis, metorchiasis can lead to significant health issues such as biliary tract inflammation and liver disease.
