Protochiton [Protochiton]

Description
Protochiton is a lesser-known genus within the family Lepidopleuridae, comprising a few species of chitons that inhabit marine environments. These chitons are characterized by their small to medium size and the presence of relatively simple, less ornamented plates compared to some of their more elaborately decorated relatives. Protochiton species tend to occupy niches where they can feed on microalgae and bacterial films, often favoring shaded or partially concealed substrates to avoid predators. The genus is significant for its role in the ecosystem as part of the benthic community, contributing to the breakdown and recycling of organic materials on the ocean floor.
