Schistosoma [Schistosoma]

Schistosoma
Description

Schistosoma is a genus of trematodes, commonly known as blood flukes. They are parasitic flatworms responsible for a highly significant group of infections in humans termed schistosomiasis, which is considered by the World Health Organization as the second-most socioeconomically devastating parasitic disease, with hundreds of millions infected worldwide. Adult worms live in the blood vessels where the females release eggs. Some of the eggs are passed out of the body to continue the parasite's lifecycle. Others become trapped in body tissues, causing immune reactions and progressive damage to organs.
