Tonicella [Tonicella]

Tonicella
Description

Tonicella is a genus of chitons belonging to the family Mopaliidae, recognizable by their brightly colored and patterned dorsal plates and the less densely hairy girdles compared to other genera in the family. These chitons inhabit intertidal to deep waters, with a distribution that spans across the cold waters of the Northern Hemisphere. Tonicella species are known for their specific association with red algae, on which they feed and where they often display coloration that camouflages them against their preferred substrate.
