Zebra Shark [Stegostoma]
Description
Stegostoma is a genus of carpet sharks in the family Stegostomatidae, containing its sole member, the zebra shark (Stegostoma tigrinum or Stegostoma fasciatum). This genus is characterized by a distinctive pattern of spots among adults that resembles a zebra's stripes in juveniles, which is the origin of its common name. Zebra sharks are found in the tropical Indo-Pacific, frequenting coral reefs and sandy flats. These nocturnal predators have flexible, slender bodies allowing them to navigate through complex reef environments with ease. They primarily feed on small fish, mollusks, and crustaceans. Zebra sharks are oviparous, laying large egg cases that are often attached to underwater structures. Despite their large size, reaching up to 2.5 meters in length, zebra sharks are known for their docility and pose little threat to humans.
