Ram's Horn Squids [Spirulida]
Description
Spirulida, known as the ram's horn squids, is represented by a single species, Spirula spirula. This small, deep-sea cephalopod is notable for its internal, coiled shell, which is rare among modern cephalopods. The shell aids in buoyancy control, allowing the squid to hover in the water. Spirula spirula lives in deep ocean waters and is usually found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Despite its deep-sea habitat, its shells often wash up on beaches, where they are collected as curiosities. Little is known about its behavior due to its inaccessible habitat.
