Vampire Squid [Vampyromorphida]
Description
Vampyromorphida, represented solely by the vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis), is a unique order of cephalopods living in extreme deep-sea environments. Unlike other cephalopods, the vampire squid has a gelatinous body and large, red eyes. It possesses retractile sensory filaments instead of true tentacles. Adapted to life in the oxygen-minimal layers of the ocean, the vampire squid uses bioluminescence for predation, defense, and communication. Despite its name and appearance, it feeds primarily on detritus and small marine particles, using a unique filament to capture its food.
