Chinese Alligator [Alligator]

Description

The genus Alligator also includes the Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis), a critically endangered species native to the Yangtze River basin in China. Much smaller than its American counterpart, the Chinese alligator is adapted to cooler climates and can hibernate in burrows during winter. It inhabits slow-moving freshwater rivers and streams, as well as lakes and ponds. Unlike the larger American alligator, the Chinese alligator is less known to venture into brackish or marine environments, sticking predominantly to freshwater habitats.
