Numbfishes [Narcine]

Description

Narcine is a genus of electric rays known commonly as Numbfishes. These rays are found in shallow, coastal waters around the world, from tropical to warm temperate zones. Numbfishes have a distinctive appearance, with a broad, flat body and a pair of large, kidney-shaped electric organs located on either side of their head. These organs can generate a significant electric discharge used to stun prey and for defense. Narcine species are bottom-dwellers, feeding on a variety of invertebrates and small fish.
