Numbfishes [Narcinidae]

Description

Narcinidae, or numbfishes, are a family of electric rays known for their ability to produce an electric discharge, though generally weaker than that of the Torpedinidae. They have a somewhat rounded to oval body shape and are found in both shallow waters and at depths down to about 1,000 meters. Numbfishes prefer sandy or muddy substrates where they can bury themselves for camouflage. They feed on small fish and invertebrates. The electric discharge is primarily used for defense and to immobilize prey. Numbfishes are characterized by their relatively small size compared to other electric rays.
