Description

Ziphius, commonly known as Cuvier's beaked whale, is the sole species within its genus in the family Ziphiidiae. It is one of the most widely distributed beaked whale species, found in deep waters of all major oceans. Cuvier's beaked whale is notable for its robust and spindle-shaped body, a small dorsal fin set two-thirds back on the body, and a distinctive melon-shaped forehead. It has a short beak compared to other beaked whales. These whales are exceptional divers, capable of reaching depths over 2,000 meters and holding their breath for over two hours. They primarily feed on squid. Despite their wide distribution, their elusive deep-water lifestyle means they are rarely seen and much of their life remains a mystery.
