Chitonids [Chitonidae]
Description
Chitonidae, or chitonids, comprise a large family of chitons with a classic chiton appearance, including a clearly segmented shell of eight plates surrounded by a girdle. These chitons are found in a wide range of marine environments, from intertidal zones to the deep sea. They are versatile feeders, primarily grazing on algae growing on rocks but some species may feed on detritus or even other small invertebrates. Their girdles can be smooth, granular, or spiky, providing some defense against predators.
