Hairy Chitons [Acanthochitonidae]
Description
Acanthochitonidae, commonly referred to as hairy chitons, are distinguished by the dense setae or 'hairs' that cover their girdle, which can sometimes extend over the shell plates. These features provide them with a unique camouflage against predators. Hairy chitons inhabit a variety of marine environments, from intertidal zones to depths of several hundred meters. They are found worldwide, with species adapting to a wide range of ecological niches. These chitons primarily feed on algae, using their radula for grazing on hard substrates.
