Keeled Chitons [Ischnochitonidae]

Description

Ischnochitonidae, or keeled chitons, are known for the distinct keel that runs along the dorsal surface of their shell plates, giving them a more angular appearance compared to other chitons. This family includes a variety of species found in marine habitats around the world, from tropical to temperate waters. Keeled chitons are benthic grazers, feeding on algae and other microorganisms on hard substrates. Their keeled plates are an adaptation that may aid in protection against predators and in managing water flow over their bodies while they move.
