Diamondback Squid [Thysanoteuthis]

Diamondback Squid
Description

Thysanoteuthis is a genus of squid and the sole genus within the family Thysanoteuthidae, known commonly as the diamondback squid. These squids are characterized by their rhomboidal fins that extend nearly the entire length of their mantle, giving them a diamond-shaped appearance when viewed from above or below. They inhabit tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, where they are known to undertake diel vertical migrations from deeper waters during the day to near the surface at night. Diamondback squids are fast-growing and short-lived, with a diet that includes a wide variety of fish and other squids. They are also known for their large, bioluminescent photophores, which are thought to play a role in communication and possibly in attracting prey.
