Ram's Horn Squid [Spirula]

Description
Spirula is the sole genus within the family Spirulidae, commonly known as the Ram's Horn Squids. Members of this genus are characterized by their small, deep-sea dwelling nature, typically living at depths of 200 to 1000 meters. They possess a unique internal shell, which is coiled and chambered, serving both as a buoyancy aid and a structural support. This shell is often found washed up on beaches and is a distinguishing feature of the genus. Spirula species are bioluminescent, capable of emitting light from organs located near their eyes, which is thought to play a role in communication and possibly in predator evasion. Their diet likely consists of small fish, plankton, and other deep-sea organisms. Despite their deep-sea habitat, relatively little is known about their behavior, reproductive strategies, and full distribution range.
