Bobtail and Bottletail Squids [Sepiolida]
Description
Sepiolida includes the bobtail and bottletail squids, which are small, benthic species found in shallow waters and on continental shelves. Unlike their pelagic relatives, these squids have a rounded shape and often bury themselves in the seabed during the day, emerging at night to feed. They exhibit complex behaviors, including burying themselves in sand to avoid predators and using their ink to create smoke-screen effects. Bobtail and bottletail squids also have symbiotic relationships with bioluminescent bacteria, which they use for camouflage and communication.
