Box Jellyfish [Chirodropidae]
Description
Chirodropidae is a family of highly venomous box jellyfish found in coastal waters from Vietnam to northern Australia. Members of this family are distinguished by their cube-shaped medusae, which can be as large as 30 centimeters (12 inches) in diameter. They possess multiple tentacles arranged in clusters at each corner of their bell. The venom of some species, such as Chironex fleckeri, is extremely potent and can be fatal to humans. These jellyfish are active swimmers and are often found in shallow waters near beaches.
