Australian Sea Lions [Neophoca]

Description

Neophoca is a genus of sea lions exclusive to Australia, encompassing only one species, the Australian Sea Lion (Neophoca cinerea). These sea lions are distinguished by their unique breeding cycle, which is not synchronized across populations, leading to almost continuous breeding at various colonies. Australian Sea Lions exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males being significantly larger and darker than females. They are known for their playful nature and curiosity in the water, often interacting with divers. Their diet is varied, consuming fish, cephalopods, and crustaceans, and they are primarily found on the southern and western coasts of Australia, where they face threats from fishing entanglement and habitat destruction.
