Berardius [Berardius]
Description
Berardius is a genus within the family Ziphiidae that includes large beaked whales, commonly known as the giant beaked whales or Baird's beaked whales. These whales are characterized by their elongated beaks, deep-diving capabilities, and preference for deep ocean waters. They are among the largest members of the beaked whale family, and they have a distinctive appearance with a robust body, small dorsal fin set far back on their body, and dark coloration. Berardius species are known to form small groups and are found in the North Pacific Ocean, with their range extending from Japan, across the North Pacific, to the west coast of North America.
