Elephant Seals [Mirounga]
Description
Mirounga is a genus comprising two species of elephant seals, known for being the largest species of seals. They are characterized by their significant sexual dimorphism, with males being much larger than females and possessing a large proboscis, which is used to produce loud roaring noises, especially during the mating season. Elephant seals are named for their size and the male's large nose. They primarily inhabit waters in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with one species found in the North Pacific and the other around the Southern Ocean.
