Earless Seals [Phocidae]

Description

Phocidae, known as earless or true seals, lack external ear flaps and have a more streamlined body adapted for efficient swimming. They are less capable of movement on land, moving in a caterpillar-like fashion. True seals have a wide distribution, inhabiting both polar and temperate seas. They primarily feed on fish, squid, and a variety of marine organisms. The family includes species such as the harbor seal and the elephant seal, the latter being the largest species of seal.
