Harp Seals [Pagophilus]
Description
Pagophilus is a monotypic genus that includes the harp seal, a species of earless seal found primarily in the northernmost Atlantic Ocean and parts of the Arctic Ocean. Named for the harp-shaped markings on the back of adults, these seals are highly adapted to life in cold waters. They have a thick blubber layer and can migrate over vast distances following the seasonal movement of pack ice. Harp seals are social animals, forming large colonies for breeding, whelping, and molting.
