Hooded Seal [Cystophora]
Description
Cystophora is a genus of earless seals unique for the large bladder-like sac that adult males can inflate and display from their nasal area. This distinctive feature is used in visual and acoustic displays, especially during mating seasons. The hooded seal, the sole species in this genus, is found primarily in the central and western North Atlantic, ranging from Svalbard in the north to New England and the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the south. These seals are known for their deep dives and ability to travel long distances.
