Marbled Electric Rays [Torpedo]
Description
Torpedo is a genus of rays known for their ability to generate electric shocks, a characteristic shared by all members of the family Torpedinidae. These rays have a nearly circular or oval disc shape, and their bodies are adapted for a benthic lifestyle, living mostly buried in sand or mud on the seafloor. They use their electric discharge to stun prey, which includes fish and crustaceans, and for defense against predators. The genus is widely distributed in warm and temperate seas. Species in this genus are recognized by their distinctive marbled or spotted appearance, which helps them camouflage with the seafloor.
