Phocarctos is a monotypic genus represented by the New Zealand Sea Lion (Phocarctos hookeri), also known as the Hooker's Sea Lion. This genus is endemic to New Zealand, found primarily on the subantarctic Auckland and Campbell Islands, with some populations extending to the southern coast of New Zealand's South Island. New Zealand Sea Lions are among the most threatened pinnipeds, with their populations affected by bycatch in fishing operations, disease, and habitat modification. They are characterized by their bulky build, with males displaying a dark mane. They have a diverse diet that includes fish, squid, and octopuses. Conservation efforts are in place to protect and recover their populations.
