Northern Fur Seals [Callorhinus]
Description
Callorhinus is a monotypic genus within the Otariidae family, containing only the Northern Fur Seal, Callorhinus ursinus. This genus is characterized by the males' thick fur, which distinguishes them from other eared seals. Northern Fur Seals are pelagic, spending most of their lives in the open ocean far from land, except during the breeding season when they return to specific rookeries on islands in the North Pacific Ocean. They are known for their long migrations, impressive diving ability, and social behavior, forming large breeding colonies where males establish territories and maintain harems of females. Their diet consists mainly of fish and squid.
