Southern Sea Lions [Otaria]
Description
Otaria is a genus of eared seals within the family Otariidae, known commonly as the Southern Sea Lions. These large pinnipeds are characterized by their notable sexual dimorphism, with males significantly larger than females, and males possessing a distinctive mane, which gives them a lion-like appearance. They are primarily distributed along the southern coasts of South America, frequenting coastal waters where they feed on a variety of fish and cephalopods. Otaria is notable for its loud, roaring calls and gregarious nature, with individuals often found resting in large, noisy colonies on beaches and rocky shores.
