Histioteuthids [Histioteuthidae]
Description
Histioteuthidae, known as Histioteuthids or cock-eyed squids, are named for their asymmetrical eyes; one eye is significantly larger than the other. This adaptation is believed to help them detect bioluminescent prey and predators in the dimly lit waters of the mesopelagic zone. They have a global distribution and are characterized by their unique eye structure and bioluminescent properties.
