Stigmatoteuthis [Stigmatoteuthis]

Stigmatoteuthis
Description

Stigmatoteuthis is a genus within the Histioteuthidae family, distinguished by their elongated bodies and large, complex eyes that are adapted for the minimal light conditions of the deep sea. These squids possess photophores, or light-producing organs, along their bodies, which are thought to play roles in communication and in attracting prey. The species within this genus vary in size and are known for their remarkable ability to adjust their buoyancy using an ammonia-filled chamber within their bodies, allowing them to hover motionless in the water. Their arms and tentacles are equipped with suckers and hooks for capturing prey, which includes small fish and other cephalopods.
