Zoanthids [Zoanthidae]

Description

Zoanthidae is a family of benthic, colonial anthozoans commonly found in coral reef environments, intertidal zones, and other marine settings around the world. Members of this family are characterized by their encrusting or massive colonies that are connected by a coenenchyme, a fleshy tissue. Zoanthids are well known for their bright and varied colors, and ability to withstand a range of environmental conditions. They possess symbiotic algae known as zooxanthellae within their tissues, which help in photosynthesis, providing the zoanthids with nutrients. Zoanthids are popular in the aquarium trade, but also face threats from over-collection and habitat destruction.
