Ross Seals [Ommatophoca]
Description
Ommatophoca is a genus that includes the Ross seal, a species that inhabits the pack ice of Antarctica's Southern Ocean. Ross seals are the least understood and most rarely seen of all Antarctic seals, due to their preference for thick, inner pack ice environments. They are characterized by their relatively small size, large eyes, and the unique, siren-like vocalizations made by males. Ross seals feed primarily on squid and fish and are known for their solitary nature.
